Community Service - Court Ordered or Recommended

Habitat for Humanity-Coosa Valley welcomes volunteers who are required by a court to do community service for certain offenses. 

If, at any time, the applicant fails to comply with all of the terms outlined in the policy, the relationship between Habitat and the applicant may be dissolved.

OVERVIEW

Habitat for Humanity-Coosa Valley  is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization, dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and globally and to making adequate, affordable shelter a possibility for all God's children.  We welcome partners and volunteers who share our vision.

EXPECTATIONS

The success of Habitat is tied directly to the reliability, dependability and work ethic of our volunteers. Supervision of CSV (community service volunteers) participants will be provided by Habitat staff at the ReStore.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Time frame for completion must be realistic based on Habitat's needs and participant' s availability, and all hours must be completed during Habitat's normal business hours.
  • We DO NOT accept those that have been charged with ANY felony (excluding drug court), ANY violent offense, theft, or  shoplifting. Typical ALLOWABLE offenses include traffic violations, DUI's, and small drug charges. If you have a questoin please reach out to us. 
  • Minimum age is 16 years old.

REQUIREMENTS

Scheduling volunteer time, Rescheduling/canceling time

  • CSV will use the volunteer calendar on our website to schedule your hours. There are limited spaces for each day so the earlier you register the better.
  • Minimum 2 hour shifts. You can sign up for multiple shifts in one day if as long as they are available on the calendar. 
  • Must provide identification upon arrival for your first shift.
  • 24 Hours notice BEFORE the scheduled shift must be given in order to cancel or reschedule. We will give you 2 no call no shows before action is taken. Failing to comply will result in a phone call to your probation officer/ court and you will not be allowed to complete your community service hours with Habitat.

Attendance

  • Must arrive on-time and stay until end of assigned shift. 
  • Must check in with supervisor and sign in/ out upon arrival and departure.
  • Must complete Habitat's volunteer forms before starting first shift.
  • Must let supervisor know when taking a break. Frequency and duration of breaks are based on the total number of hours worked.
  • No cell-phone usage during a shift unless on a management approved break.

Appearance

  • Must be clean, neat and dressed appropriately, in well-fitting clothing and sturdy shoes (no sandals or clogs).
  • Must wear a Habitat-supplied name tag during your shift, if working in the ReStore or on the build site.

Attitude

  • Must treat Habitat staff, volunteers and others with respect and courtesy at all times.
  • Must use polite and appropriate language.
  • Use of tobacco products, alcoholic beverages or drugs are prohibited at Habitat work sites, although outdoor "smoke breaks" may be taken, in designated area.

REASONS FOR TERMINATION

If a volunteer fails to comply with policy or behaves inappropriately, Habitat may terminate the relationship with the volunteer. Specific examples for dismissal include, but are not limited to:

  • Calling to call to cancel/ reschedule on more than one occasion, failure to call to cancel/reschedule, or tardiness on more than one occasion.
  • Taking excessive/unauthorized breaks, use of cell phone, or other wasting of time.
  • Falsifying hours on volunteer sign-in sheet or court log-in sheet.
  • Inappropriate/unacceptable behavior as determined by Habitat staff, including alcohol consumption or drug use prior to volunteer shift, horseplay or unsafe activities, failure to follow instructions of supervisor, or any other such behavior .
